Former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Ranger Suárez hinted he intended to test free agency following the hiring of agent Scott Boras in December 2024. Suárez ended up signing with the Boston Red Sox this offseason. Not having him hinders the Phillies' rotation, especially at the start of the 2026 regular season. Philadelphia didn't want to risk history repeating itself next winter. They agreed to a multi-year extension with starter Jesús Luzardo on March 9.
The Phillies have secured more rotation depth for the next several seasons with Luzardo's contract extension (subscription required). Managing partner John Middleton's recent comments about the future of the team's starting pitching should give the fan base confidence in the front office led by president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski and general manager Preston Mattingly.
