A former FC Dallas Academy member made his debut on a first team after months of preparation and training with the youth teams in the Bundesliga.
Weston McKennie debuted for Schalke in their final game of the season, a 1-1 draw against Ingolstadt. The Little Elm native had trained with the FC Dallas Academy since 2009, since he was 10 years old, but couldn’t come to terms on a Homegrown contract and left the club in August of 2016 to sign with the German side.
The midfielder played in 21 games for the Schalke U19's, before finally receiving his debut for the first team, becoming the ninth American player in the 2016-2017 Bundesliga season to make an appearance.
