Tonight, the United States will take on Jamaica in the Gold Cup Final for a chance to secure its sixth title. While the usual starters are not playing in this year’s edition, many players on the roster are auditioning for potential spots for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
One of those is Jorge Villafana, who has started in three of the five Gold Cup matches.
Villafana played a key role for the US in their 2-0 win for Costa Rica. As a left back, Villafana pressed high up the pitch and put in multiple crosses. The usage of the fullbacks going up and down the pitch was the predominant form of offense for the majority of the game and Villafana’s balls helped put the pressure on the Ticos defense early.
